Surgery, peds residents; transfusion med fellow join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Jon Brannon Harrison, M.D.

Dr. Jon Brannon Harrison, recently a general surgery resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of surgery.

After receiving his B.A. in biology cum laude from the University of Mississippi in 2009, Harrison earned his M.D. in 2014 at UMMC, where he had his general surgery residency.

Harrison offers outpatient surgery and clinic appointments at the Merit Madison location. His areas of particular interest include gastrointestinal disorders, benign biliary pathology and minimally invasive hernia repair. He is also trained in the use of the da Vinci robotic surgery system.

Mitchell Watson Hobbs, M.D.

Dr. Mitchell Watson Hobbs, recently a pediatrics resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

After receiving his B.A. in English summa cum laude from the University of Mississippi in 2012, Hobbs earned his M.D. cum laude in 2016 at UMMC, where he had his pediatrics residency from 2016-19.

An active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Mississippi Chapter of the AAP, Hobbs received the Outstanding Pediatrics Senior Resident Award this year. An Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa inductee, he is the coauthor of an article in the peer-reviewed publication Skin: The Journal of Cutaneous Medicine. He has given a webinar presentation at the Mississippi River Valley Pulmonary Conference.

Sara E. Johnston, M.D.

Dr. Sara E. Johnston, recently a blood banking/transfusion medicine fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pathology.

After receiving her B.S. in biology and biochemistry summa cum laude from Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, in 2008, Johnston served as a pharmacy technician at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, from 2009-10 before earning her M.D. in 2014 at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Columbia, where she had an anatomic and clinical pathology residency from 2014-18. She then had her blood banking/transfusion medicine fellowship from 2018-19 at UT-Southwestern, Dallas.

An active member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the College of American Pathologists, Johnston is the coauthor of three posters presented at scientific meetings nationally.
